UNIT 29 P3 - Plan an installation and an. You would need to plan how you’re going to go about installing the software and when the best. UNIT 18 M2 - Import.
(Updated Again, DONE!!) • The Risk of Upgrading When upgrading or installing software you must be aware of the risks. For example the down-time on the system required and the chance of incompatible files.
It is also important to plan ahead by backing up your work and finding a way to go back from the update. • Potential Loss of Service When a user is installing a software program there will be a length of time where the user won’t be able to use their computer system because the system will become inactive while the installation is taking place. This can affect a business because they are losing money. Sometimes the installation process may not take as long but sometimes it can take up to over an hour, due to installations happening on multiple computer systems. This large amount of time may disturb a business.
For example the I.T technicians could update software right now but since classes like I.T, Business and Graphics are on it would be bad timing because users have deadlines to reach and also many users will be using the PC’s for revision. There is a risk that this downtime will reach an unacceptable level and so this should be planned out during the summer holidays, when the employees are off or as soon as the employees go home. Evaluate the risks to an organisation of upgrading software (D2). If the system were to go down in a business it would affect a lot of things like customers, employees and income.
The business would lose money and customers because the business is centered around a network like Argos, without the network they would have to shut down the store because everything there is online. The business would lose a lot of money because the customers will look else where if the business has shut down and the employees will not be able to do there jobs. T he Customers The customers will not be too bothered if the business is closed because they can go to other shops which sell the same thing or go online and find the certain item which they are looking for. But some customers may take this in a bad way and not come back to the business. So to avoid this from happening they need to get the business up and running quickly to prevent losing profit and customers.
Risk Involved in updating a system. Incompatibility Issues Another massive risk is that when software are updated they may not be compatible with older software, hardware’s and data files which will become a huge problem for the business or college. For example the college is using Windows operating system but they may switch to Mac operating system there’s a great chance that most of the software, hardware’s and data files will not be compatible with Windows. So to prevent this you would need to find alternative drivers for your hardware devices, as Windows drivers would not be compatible with Mac operating system. Another example is when you update from Windows XP to Windows Vista you will find out that older software on the users system will not be compatible and will be useless. To prevent incompatibility issues from occurring you must keep all of the software updated at all times. In order to minimize risks the organisation will have to make Backup Files, Low risk time Installation and Incremental Installations.
Data Loss is a big risk when updating a system. The operating system and applications can be reinstalled, but data is unique and you might not ever be able to re-create it. Updating your system should not be an issue and your data will probably stay but to be safe you must Back up your work onto an external hard drive or on the cloud. After the update your data might not be compatible so lucky you made a back up before hand so you can roll back the machine to its previous update and find a solution. Insufficient hardware. A new operating systems require heftier hardware than their predecessors.
A system that runs the old operating system just fine may run the new one very slowly or not at all, so be sure to check out the hardware requirements before you do the update. You might need a faster processor and you almost always need more memory because the operating system takes a lot up. Other components might need to be upgraded too so there are no incompatibility issues. Driver problems are one of the most common causes of all sorts of trouble connected with an operating system upgrade.
Just because you get through the installation process and the OS runs, that doesn’t mean things haven’t gone wrong. You may find that your soundcard no longer works or that you can’t print in the new operating system. That’s usually a driver issue.
Risk Reduction Measures It is important to know about the risks involved when ever upgrading or installing. There are three main methods for reducing the risk involved: Backups: Before installing a new operating system or major update always make sure to backup all of your data and software. This will safeguard your work and if something goes wrong with the update then you have your backup which you can use. This is called a Roll Back which will basically roll back time to before you updated your system, this is very useful because it can help users who may not like the new update which they have installed.
You can also backup your data and software in different locations just incase if this gets lost from a specific place. Installing at low Risk Times: If the college were to update all the computer systems during the day when all the students were in. The I.T students wouldn’t be able to access their work because pieces of software will be updating and no ones how long it may take for the updates/upgrades. So it is important to have the I.T Technicians do all of these updates during the Summer Holidays where is cant trouble anyone plus if there is a problem they will have lots of time to deal with it and this will not affect anyone. Incremental Installation: If you are going to be installing new software on a large amount of PC’s it is always better to do it to a small amount of PC’s so if there is a problem only a few systems will have it.
This can be very beneficial because if you are running a business, only a few will be updating at once while the others will be able to use for the employees. Any problems which occur with the updating problems can be dealt with and resolved.

P3, M2,M3,M4 INSTALLATION Installation is usually more expensive than upgrading. Installation may require more time than upgrading Greater chance of problems arising as you have no experience with the software to date. Training needed to be given to employees.
An advantage would be that it has all the features you require that an upgrade may not offer. Installation do not always involve new software, it may re quire to be re-installed if not functioning properly. UPGRADES Usually offer greater tools and facilities Generally cheaper than purchasing a new one.
Less training due to the similarities. Relatively easier in carrying out the upgrade. As a rule better off upgrading software rather than installing a new one unless the upgrade fails to offer the features you are looking for.
M2 – Explain the requirements involved when preparing for a software installation or upgrade Planning: (need a plan before you install or upgrade) Sequence of activities: Ensure the computer system meets or exceeds the SW min requirements. Fresh installation or installing over existing SW is appropriate. Manual Testing Material By Suresh Reddy Pdf here. Ensure installation method is suitable. SW stored on DVD, you would need a DVD drive.
Select the appropriate location for the SW to be installed. E.g., Main Hard Drive, Network drive etc. Define suitable steps in carrying out the installation or upgrade that will include checking contents, reading manuals, performing virus scans, backing up data, configuring the SW. Materials: When planning for an installation or upgrade you need to make sure that you have all of the materials you will need available to you and that they are fit for purpose.
The materials include: The computer system. The SW installation media.
(loading facilities to be used) Installation guides. License keys. Timing: Chose the best suitable time for the process that will minimise business disruptions Communications: You need to consider who needs to be communicated during various installation stages and how you will communicate with them. The following people are usually informed: End users: people who use the system, inform how long the process would take and how long there would be down time, as it will effect their productivity. Management: inform them during the process, they need to know when the new SW can be used by employees, need to know of any problems that may arise that may have an effect on business operations. SW Vendors: Mainly for technical support – usual medium is through phone, IM, or web site Main form of communication is via, good for referencing and filing.
Guidance: (suitable guidance for end users) Training end users before installation can greatly reduce the amount of support that may arise after actual installation or upgrade. In case of technical problems, you must make sure who the end user must supposed to contact for assistance ranging from low to high level support. This is known as escalation. Also during installation the installer may need to know who to contact when problems arise. Getting permission and Access: Workstation have user access controls Administrator accounts have the right to install Hw & SW May need to obtain correct user login details P3 – Plan an installation and an Upgrade Looking through the previous point for M2, you need to plan what steps you would take when you would install the AVG anti virus program Again Plan how you would upgrade the Anti virus program to a new version. M3 – Design and implement a procedure to preserve data integrity during an upgrade You need to show how you can back up data, what data would you back up How to create system restore points and restore the state. Screen shots and creating a sort of manual to on how to back up, restore, system restore M4 – Design a procedure to back out of SW upgrades Sometimes after the process you will find there are problems with the current system: e.g.
SW incompatible with new OS. Variety of Back-Out Procedures: SW and Data Backup before installation. Which will allow to be restored to a previous state. Uninstall the new SW or upgrade. Set System recovery points, a feature found in modern OS. Where would you back up and on what media. Construct a procedure using the above points and from M3.
Backup in Windows Restricted access Need to show how to do the following Windows Back up Windows system restore.
